Thematic area: GREEN AWARDS

ContentA call for applications is now open for the 2028 European Green Capital and Green Leaf Awards. The European Commission intends to reward the most virtuous

cities in terms of urban sustainability, environmental innovation, and quality of life. The 2028 editions will feature the European Green Capital (EGC) and European
Green Leaf (EGL) awards, aimed at cities that demonstrate a strong commitment to urban sustainability, environmental innovation, and improving citizens' well-being.
Over two-thirds of the European population lives in urban areas, and cities therefore play a crucial role in addressing the challenges of climate change, pollution,
and biodiversity loss. Projects may be developed by public bodies in collaboration with SMEs to implement innovative solutions. The European Green Capital award is
intended for cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants and selects a single winning city. The European Green Leaf Award, on the other hand, is aimed at small and
medium-sized urban centers with more than 20,000 inhabitants and may award the title to up to two cities each year. Deadline 1 April 2026
